I went to see Fifty Shades Darker this week at the cinema and I actually loved it! I’ve recently bought myself a yearly Cineworld Unlimited card where I pay £17.40 a month for as much cinema as I wish and it’s the BEST thing I have done in a long time, as I’m watching films I never thought I would! So with us all still in the spirit of Valentine’s Day I thought it would be ideal to review the most anticipated romance film of the year. I personally really enjoyed it, I’d say it was 100% better than the first film. I didn’t rate the first of the series ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ but I thought the new addition was a huge improvement. It actually had a solid story to it and wasn’t just about the Sex! I give it a 7/10.
Fifty Shades Darker (2017) is the second instalment of the Fifty Shades franchise. The story follows on from the first film, following the life of normalton Anastasia Steele and crazy ‘dominant’ Christian Grey. While Anastasia tries to move on with her life with starting a new job, Christian tries his hardest to get her back into his life. Shes easily persuaded but demands they have a new arrangement which involved no rules or no punishments. The two begin to build a strong bond and work on their trust, but they are faced with many obstacles from Christian’s taunting past which really puts their future relationship to the test.
I think that Jamie Dorman who plays Christian Grey, was cast perfectly. No-one can deny that he isn’t totally gorgeous which is what is expected from the Christian Grey described in the books. Dorman plays the role superbly and extremely convincing, his ability to portray such a challenging complex character is mesmerising. He really does play a great part and gives the audience exactly what they want from Christian grey. I’m personally not sure about the casting of Dakota Johnson as Anastasia Steele. I understand that the Anastasia role is supposed to be someone that is simple and the complete opposite to Christian grey but in my eyes I didn’t picture anyone like Johnson looks wise. However, I think she plays a fantastic part and really brings her own to the role. I have always been surprised that Rita Ora is in the film, I didn’t expect her to be so good. She’s a fantastic singer and I honestly didn’t think she would be great at acting too. She plays Christian’s sister extremely well and suits the role perfectly. I think that all the actors involved in this film are excellent, I wouldn’t change any of the casting personally.
All sets in the film are absolutely beautiful, however kept to a bare minimum. The flat Christian Grey lives in himself for example is definitely everyone’s dream home: there were huge house goals shown! I personally don’t think too much attention was paid to the costumes in the film, they were pretty simple throughout with the one outfit from the ball standing out over the rest. Although that wasn’t all that special!
Overall, the film was shot so much better than the first. You could instantly tell that more time and effort had been taken into making the film in my opinion. The detail in lighting and editing was very much noticed and helped to create a great film. However, if you did put it up against the top Oscar winning films, it would be nothing in comparison: It is just much better than the first installment!
I have read quite a few reviews online that have stated that the script and story is very poor, but I completely disagree. I think there was a fully structured story which was easy to follow and I felt like the script was much more relatable; it was way more realistic! I would definitely recommend watching this film for some light entertainment. I for one look forward to the next one..
